The Ideal Wife by Mary Balogh

Abigail Gardiner is perfect at least the Miles Ripley, the Earl of Severn thinks so. In a desperate attempt to avoid the marriage his mother and sisters are pushing on him he proposes to Abigail, believing she has all the qualities of his ideal wife, a plain, dull, quiet, ordinary woman, that will leave him alone to do live his life in peace. After growing up in a house of females all Miles wants is someone who will not manage his life away. When Miles meets Abigail he believes he has found the perfect candidate and immediately proposes marriage, a proposal that would solve every one's problem or so he thinks.

Abigail is nothing like the woman Miles believes will be his Ideal Wife but she is desperate. She has been fired from her post and is need of a new post and a roof over her head. This proposal will solve all her problems. But Abigail has secrets. Will her secret prevent her from finding love in the arms of the man that could make all her dreams come true.

The Ideal Wife is a sweet love story. Our hero and heroine make a very sweet couple and the love that grows between them will warm your heart. Abigail is one of the most likable heroines I have ever encountered. She is warm, caring, sweet, just a bit too talkative and so honest you can't help but fall for her. Miles is your typical aristocrat type character. The presence of Abigail in his life gives him more character and depth. The story itself follows all the typical romance rules and has fairly predictable, uninspired ending. The sex scenes are so sedate they were not really necessary. And any scene that did not include Abigail was fairly dull.

I rated this book a 3.5. If your looking for a quick read to kill some time on the beach it is perfect. The story will keep you just interested enough to keep reading it but not quit interested enough to invest your heart in these characters.
